STATE REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTGRADUATE TRAINING

An increasing number of states are requiring residencies or other postgraduate training prior to full licensure. As of April 1999, 74% of the fifty states require postgraduate training (27 states specified a one-year residency; 10 states required one year postgraduate training).

Licensure requirements include providing written documentation such as undergraduate and podiatric medical school transcripts, satisfactory passage of national podiatric medical board examinations, postgraduate training prerequisites, appropriate state licensure fees, and satisfactory passage of a state written and/or oral examination.

The following is a roster and description of individual state licensing requirements for the fifty states, District of Columbia, Ontario, Canada and Puerto Rico. Our sincere thanks to the Office of Student Records of the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, Chicago, IL who annually compiles this information for distribution.
