Policy & Procedures

Policy

The primary responsibility of a student enrolled in a college of podiatric medicine is the successful completion of the academic program leading to the DPM degree. Nevertheless, students have a very legitimate interest in the enhancement of their profession. Within this context, AACPM wishes to utilize students who can devote time necessary to participate in a number of limited Network activities. Under no circumstance does the AACPM wish to engage students in activities that may, if only remotely, detract them from their primary responsibility as a student.

Responsibilities

1. Receive and act upon email messages forwarded to Student Mentors from either the inquirers on the Network or directly from a student inquirer.

2. Invite inquirers, who, after the initial email exchange, wish to pursue an interest in a podiatric career, to visit the Mentor’s college campus (in accordance with school policy) or contact a DPM Mentor in the inquirer’s area.

3. When feasible, contact health professions advisors at the Mentor’s undergraduate college and offer to speak to premed clubs or advise students about a career in podiatric medicine during breaks in the academic program.

4. Allow Student Mentor’s name, podiatric school and email address to appear on the DPM Mentors Network associated with assigned States.

Student Mentor Endorsement

All Mentors seeking to become a member of the DPM Mentors Network must complete an application and receive the endorsement of the appropriate agencies. In the case of a Student Mentor, the student must obtain the endorsement of the Student Affairs Officer or Director of Admissions at his/her college of podiatric medicine. Application to become a Student Mentor will be made directly on the AACPM Website. The endorsement process is automated and student mentors will be advised of their status by email.
First year students are NOT eligible to be Student Mentors.

Duration

Student Mentors are required to inform the Director of the DPM Mentors Network when they are to graduate.
